He said Nigerians have every course to thank Almighty Allah that Nigeria is still one united country today, adding that some people may say Nigeria has not gone far in terms of development, stressing that there would be good development through peaceful co-existence.

“Yes, some people may say we have not gone far in items of development but I want to remind you that Rome is not built in a day, the most important thing is that if we can be living together happily, we have peaceful co-existence, I can assure you that there would be a lot of development.”

The Deputy Governor noted that Nigeria is improving but the problem Nigeria had initially was the incursion of the military junta that pushed the nation many years back, adding that with ten year of uninterrupted democratization Nigeria will get there.

“When Nigeria obtained Independent in 1960, things were not like this then; we are improving the problem we had initially was the incursion of the military junta that pushed us many years back. Thank God we have now had ten year democratization in Nigeria without any interruption by the military and our prayer is that the military will never come to rule this country again, we will get there, to some people we have not moved very fast but it is better to be late than never and I’m sure that by the grace of God will we be there Nigeria is improving.” Ali Olanusi added.

He, however, pointed out that real Federalism as stipulated in the Constitution has not been practiced to the letter which he described as the key to progress.

Olanusi also urged the people to continue living in peace as brothers and sisters for meaningful development to take place.

FROM GRASS TO GRACE STORY OF JOSEPH OLAKUNLE OROJO

orojoFROM GRASS TO GRACE STORY OF JOSEPH OLAKUNLE OROJO

From February,16,1923-July3rd,2009 [Age 86yrs]

Little Olakunle was Born on February 16, 1923 in the popular Ekiteji Quarters in Arigidi Akoko, a small town that has bequeathed the nation with personalities like Prophet T.B. Joshua,Justice Adojutielegan,Akande’s Yekini Olanipekun and Gani Adams, in Ondo State, Justice Orojo set his mind firmly on the legal profession and later became a Judge of the High Court of Western State in 1975 and transferred to Ondo State in 1976 following the unbundling of the regions.

Two years later, his skills and commitment led to his elevation as the Chief Judge of the state, a position he held until 1985.

Prior to his elevation as a judge, he was the first indigenous Director of the Nigerian Law School; a position he held between 1968 and 1975. His remarkable improvement of the Law School and innovative style of administration probably explains why he remains one of the longest-serving Directors General to date.

He was the person found good enough to succeed Mr. G. R. Ruud, who was the last expatriate at the foremost Law School in the country, the Nigerian Law School. To say he was dedicated to the advancement and progress of the law profession, lawyers and students would be an understatement; he gave his whole life to the legal profession.

He was also Chairman of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission from 1988 to 1993 as well as the Chairman of the Council of Legal Education 999 – 2003.

He was not only a top notch administrator, pioneering judge and remarkable legal expert; he was a prolific and versatile writer. He wrote on a wide range of legal courses and areas and was the most respected authority in many areas. There was an unquestionable and unanimous reliance on his books when anything like company law, commercial law, professional ethics, Nigerian Tax law and Arbitration and Conciliation and many others.

Among books he wrote are “Commercial Law and Practice in Nigeria”, which was first published in 1983, and has gone on to be published in four editions, “Nigerian company Tax Law”, which came out in 1979, “Conduct and Etiquette of Legal Practitioners” in the same year, “Professional Conduct of Legal Practitioners in Nigeria”, which appeared only in 2008 and “Law and Practice of Arbitration and Conciliation in Nigeria”, a book he co-authored which was published in 1999.

A quintessential legal expert, his image on the Bar, the Bench and even in academic circles loomed very large. And for those of us who passed through him, directly or indirectly, whether as undergraduate students in faculties of law or at the Nigerian Law School, his name can never be erased from our memory as his book “Company Law and Practice in Nigeria” remains a leading authority in both company law and commercial law. Then, and I believe it remain so, his most popular book is generally known as ‘OROJO’.

When an individual is as productive as Justice Orojo in book publication, it would almost amount to a waste of time to begin to trace the number of articles such a person has contributed to journals and other research or academic activities.

His contributions to learned journals in the country as regards the Bar, the Bench and other law-related matters are staggering and well beyond listing or mention.

Orojo a doyen and icon of the legal profession-Mimiko Governor Olusegun Mimiko in a press statement recently described the death of late Dr Orojo as another sad and irreparable loss, not only to Ondo State but Nigeria and the entire world. Dr. Mimiko paid glowing tribute to Dr Orojo whom he described as a doyen and icon of the legal profession. Mimiko said that “the landmark judgement in 1983 by Dr Olakunle Orojo in the court case of Adekunle Ajasin versus Akin Omoboriowo in which he returned the petitioner, Chief Ajasin as the duly elected governor of the old Ondo State, a judgement affirmed by both the Appeal and Supreme Courts, thus becoming an authority for judges in the subsequent returns of petitioners whose mandates were stolen during election as amplified by our recent victory at the law courts in Ondo State.” While commiserating with the family, Dr Mimiko said: “On behalf of the good people of Ondo State, I want to express our heartfelt condolence and sympathy to the family of Dr Olakunle Orojo. He was a great jurist, lawyer and an institution in the nation’s legal profession. It was a very personal and sad loss to us in Ondo State and we join millions of others to mourn a great son of this state. “We also commiserate with the members of the legal profession over this irreparable loss. Pa Orojo would be missed but we are happy for his numerous contributions to the growth of the legal profession and the nation as a whole.”

Ondo stands still for Fawehinmi:

Ondo politicians unite to bury Gani

Akure beggars protest non-inclusion in the programme

Beginning with the beautiful designer invitation card from the government of Ondo State, a public holiday declared, and the massive turn out of people the funeral ceremony oganised for the late human rights crusader, Chief Gani Oyesola Fawehinmi had all the trappings of a historic event.

A colourful event attended by all shades of people from different ideologies, religions and persuasions, it was a unifying experience during which emotions were given a free rein as an outpouring of euologies gushed out for the inimitable laywer who was christened the Senior Advocate of the Masses for his contributions to the cause of freeing the Nigerian masses from the shackles of poverty as well as educational and political oppression.

At times the atmosphere was sober and at others it was electric as similar sentiments ran through those who felt a sense of loss; the passage of one of the greatest sons of Ondo State and indeed Nigeria.

As they say, it was a red letter day. Because of Gani’s philosophy, all arrangements geared towards his burial from the state government were aimed at showing to the world how much he was loved by the people.

The lavish package of the event, according to the Commissioner of Information, Ranti Akerele, was just an open demonstration of the pricelessness of Gani’s worth.

The event scheduled to take off at about 11a.m kicked off earlier than schedule as visitors and sympathizers began to throng the Akure Township Stadium as early as 8.00 am.

Though it was a bit hectic to control the crowd, it was well managed because of the heavy presence of armed police, secret service officials and some paramilitary men. Information from the government circles revealed that the event was commissioned to the Event and Public Relation Agency known as TPT Event Company owned by Tokunbo Modupe a frontline African media consultant.

From the posters of Chief Gani Fawehinmi that littered the major cities of Ondo State and the entrance to the venue of the event, it was a beauty to behold as large banners and flexi posters of the deceased adorned the stadium complex.

The arrival of the Governor Olusegun Mimiko leading his cabinet members and some top government functionaries in the state to witness the event signalled the beginning proper. Different religious groups, political groups, labour unions, students associations and cultural organisations were heavily represented within the stadium complex as they all filed out to pay their last homage to the senior advocate of the masses.

One of the most remarkable phenomenon that characterised the death of Chief Gani Fawehinmi was that it also brought to the state unity among the political class.

The people of Ondo State for the first time threw away their irreconcilable differences and joined hands with the government to give Gani a befitting burial. Political leaders across the divides were seen conspicuously at the venue without any recourse to being afraid of been molested.

Unlike during other state events which members of the State House of Assembly had always been absent, Honourable Taofik Abdusalam the Speaker, apart from honouring the deceased with his presence, he was given all the compliment of his office and he was one of the guest speakers and he was seen interacting freely with everybody.

Apart from the Action Congress [AC] posters pasted in conspicuous places around the city bidding farewell, some key members were also at the event from within and outside the state. Politicians including Mr Femi Falana, Dr Kayode Fayemi Ekiti State governorship aspirant and Dr. Bode Ademodi the coordinator of the Afenifere Renewal Group [ARG] and former Special Adviser to Governor Adebayo Adefarati on Bitumen were all on hand to support the Labour Party government to give Gani a world class burial.

If tributes were yardstick to measure a man destined for paradise or if words of exultation were yardsticks for a dead man to wake up, it will be most likely Gani will rise again as speakers had one good thing or the other to tell the world about the deceased.

The only set of people whose interest were left unattended to were Akure beggars who were hoping to have a field day. They were disappointed as they were not included in the programme.

Speaking with our reporter at the venue of the event two of the physically challenged persons the duo of Emmanuel Olojede and Dapo Olusanya said they squeezed themselves into the arena. They berated the government for negating Gani’s ideals and desire to create avenue for the downtrodden to be at his burial.

‘After all, we are aware Chief Gani instructed that we should be cared for. That was why his burial was delayed. He wanted beggars to attend his burial. That was why many blind and beggars were feted at his Lagos home. Why can’t Mimiko care for us today?’ they queried.

They concluded that the government’s attitude will not stop them from giving Gani their last respect a they plan to storm Ondo Town the venue of the final burial en masse today.
