LEKAN SHOLA ADEPOJU, CHIP OFF THE OLD BLOCK

Ishola AdepojuThe name of late Irun-Akoko music exponent, Ishola Adepoju, may not ring any bell among non-Ekiti/Akoko music lovers and the younger generations. But few of those who knew him would argue that he was the best Ekiti dialect musician that ever lived. The most popular Ekiti musician, Elemure Ogunyemi, whose name has become synonymous with the genre among even non-Ekitis, attested to this fact in one of his albums, in which he addressed Adepoju as the leader of all dialect musicians. It is also on record that the late Irun Akoko, Ondo State-born Ishola Adepoju, a retired Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), was the first musician to popularise the dialect music genre beyond non-Ekiti/Akoko music lovers, and record an album. However, good news emerging from the grave of the sonorous singer is that two years after his demise, many of his numerous fans spread across Ondo, Ekiti and Osun States, who still find it hard to come to terms with the loss of the great musician from the Sunshine State, are begin-ning to take solace in the fact that Adepoju actually replaced himself in his son before breathing his last. The young Lekan Adepoju, who has already been crowned Apase of Ekiti music by no less a person than the master himself, Elemure Ogunyemi, is fast leaving up to the billings as a chip off the old block. —————– Nigerian Tribune,Saturday,14th February,2009——-
